Privacy policy

Last updated 12 October 2026

What we collect when you use Solar Companies Kenya, why, who we share it with, and the choices you have.

1. Who we are

Solar Companies Kenya ("we", "us") runs solarcompanieskenya.co.ke, an independent directory of solar companies in Kenya. We decide why and how the personal data described here is used, which makes us the data controller under Kenya's Data Protection Act, 2019.

2. What we collect

When you ask for quotes: what you need (the service, property type, approximate KPLC bill, payment preference, town and timing), anything you choose to add, your name, phone number and, if you give it, your email. When you continue to your account we also hold your password (stored only as a secure hash) and the messages and files you send in your chat.

When you claim, review or correct a listing: your name, phone, email, the company concerned and what you write.

Business listings: details of solar companies (business name, address, business phone and email, website, social media pages and EPRA licence details) from public sources: EPRA's register, Google business listings, directories and the companies' own websites. Where a business is a sole trader, some of this is personal data.

How you arrived: the page you first landed on, the site or campaign that sent you, and campaign tags in the link, kept in your browser and sent only with a request you choose to send.

Visit statistics: pages viewed and where visits came from, counted without cookies and without identifying you.

3. Why we use it, and on what lawful basis

  • To get you quotes (performing the service you asked for): we match your request to up to 3 installers and pass it to them.
  • To run your account and chat (contract), and to send you messages about your request.
  • To publish the directory (legitimate interest): helping people find licensed solar companies and check their licences. Companies can correct or remove their listing at any time.
  • To keep the site working, safe and improving (legitimate interest), including spotting spam and abuse.
  • To meet legal obligations where the law requires us to keep or disclose information.

4. Who we share it with

Installers on your request. When you send a request, we share your request details and contact details with the installers matched to it: the company you chose, and up to 2 others if you ticked that option. Each installer sees only its own conversation with you, not the others'. Installers are independent businesses responsible for how they then use your details.

Our service providers, who process data for us under contract: hosting and content delivery (Cloudflare), our database and customer records, and email delivery.

We do not sell personal data or share lists of people with anyone.

5. Transfers outside Kenya

Some of our service providers store or process data outside Kenya. Where they do, we rely on safeguards the Data Protection Act allows, such as contracts requiring the data to be protected to the same standard.

6. How long we keep it

We keep quote requests, accounts and chats while your account is open and for up to 3 years after your last activity, unless you ask us to delete them sooner or the law requires longer. Listing data is kept while the listing is live and updated when we recheck sources.

7. Cookies and your browser

The site sets no advertising or tracking cookies. It keeps a small note in your browser's local storage of how you first arrived, which is sent to us only inside a request you send. Your account area uses a session cookie to keep you signed in. If you share your location on our "near me" page, it is used in your browser to sort companies and is not sent to us.

8. Your rights

Under the Data Protection Act, 2019 you can ask to be informed how we use your data, to access it, to correct it, to delete it, to object to its use, and to move it to another service. To use these rights, message us from your account chat or use the form on our listings page and choose "Correct or remove a listing".

9. Complaints

If you are unhappy with how we handle your data, tell us first so we can put it right. You can also complain to the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC) in Kenya.

10. Changes to this policy

We will update this page when what we do changes, and show the date at the top.
