Solar inverter price list in Kenya
Typical prices for hybrid inverters, the most common type for homes, going by the median of the listings we checked:
- 1kVA hybrid: about KSh 19,800
- 1.5kVA hybrid: about KSh 24,500
- 2kVA hybrid: about KSh 34,000
- 3kVA hybrid: about KSh 52,800
- 4kVA hybrid: about KSh 47,000 (few listings)
- 5 to 6kVA hybrid: about KSh 90,000
- 8 to 12kVA hybrid: about KSh 195,000
The full tables above also cover off-grid, backup and grid-tie inverters.
Why the same size can cost KSh 25,000 or KSh 200,000
A 3kVA hybrid inverter ranged from about KSh 25,000 to KSh 199,500 in the listings we checked. The gap comes from:
- Brand and build. Specialist shops sell established brands such as Victron, Deye, Growatt, Fronius and Huawei at the top of the range. Marketplace units sit at the bottom.
- True output. Some cheap units cannot deliver their rated power continuously. Check the continuous rating, not only the peak.
- Waveform. Cheap converters may give a modified sine wave, which can make motors hum and damage some electronics. A pure sine wave inverter is safer for fridges, pumps and TVs.
- Built-in features. MPPT charging, lithium battery communication, Wi-Fi monitoring and parallel operation all add cost.
- Warranty and support. A unit with a local warranty and spare parts costs more but is far easier to get fixed.
Off-grid and grid-tie inverter prices
The off-grid and backup group is the hardest to read. Small DC to AC converters under 1kVA typically sell for about KSh 2,700, but some high-end off-grid units of 3kVA and above cost well over KSh 100,000. A 1kVA off-grid inverter typically sells for about KSh 16,000 in the listings we checked, but that middle figure hides two groups: basic marketplace converters without solar charging at about KSh 3,000 to 8,000, and branded inverters and inverter-chargers from Dayliff, Luminous and Victron at solar shops from about KSh 16,000 to KSh 124,500.
Grid-tie inverters are sold almost only by specialist shops: typically about KSh 107,000 for 3kVA, about KSh 157,000 for 5 to 6kVA, about KSh 240,000 for 8 to 12kVA, and about KSh 357,500 for commercial units above 12kW.
What else to budget for
An inverter alone does not make a system. You also need:
- batteries (see solar battery prices);
- panels sized to the inverter's solar input;
- DC and AC breakers, fuses, surge protection and earthing;
- cabling, mounting and labour.
For complete installed prices see solar system prices. Some sellers note that solar equipment may be VAT-exempt. Of the inverter sellers we checked, only Chloride Exide showed its prices as tax included, so ask for VAT to be shown on the quote.
Getting a fair solar inverter rate
Ask each installer to name the exact brand and model, its continuous kVA rating, its battery voltage and the warranty period. Then compare like with like. A quote that just says "3kVA inverter" leaves room for a cheap unit at a branded price.
Our guides to solar inverters and hybrid solar inverters explain what to ask for, or send one request and compare 3 quotes from licensed installers.
