Solar water heater price list in Kenya
Going by the median of the listings we checked:
- 150 litres, non-pressurised: about KSh 61,000
- 150 litres, pressurised: about KSh 114,000
- 200 litres, non-pressurised: about KSh 77,000
- 200 litres, pressurised: about KSh 129,000
- 300 litres, non-pressurised: about KSh 100,000
- 300 litres, pressurised: about KSh 195,000
We found only four 100-litre non-pressurised listings, from about KSh 55,700 to KSh 75,000, so treat their typical price of about KSh 62,000 as a rough guide. The 200-litre and 300-litre sizes have the most listings and the most reliable figures.
Pressurised vs non-pressurised: the price gap
A pressurised system typically costs about 1.5 to 2 times as much as a non-pressurised one of the same size. At 200 litres the gap is about KSh 52,000 in the listings we checked; at 300 litres it is about KSh 95,000.
You pay more because a pressurised tank must be stronger and comes with safety valves, and the collectors are usually heat-pipe or flat-plate designs. In return you get strong flow to every tap, including upstairs. If you have one bathroom fed from a raised tank, a non-pressurised system often does the job for much less.
Other things that push the price up: a stainless steel tank instead of galvanised, flat-plate collectors, and known brands with longer tank warranties.
What installation adds
The prices above are for the heater unit. The installed price also includes:
- a roof stand or reinforcement, since a full tank is heavy;
- plumbing from the tank to your bathrooms, with insulated hot-water pipes;
- a tempering (mixing) valve to stop scalding;
- for pressurised systems, a pressure-relief valve and sometimes a booster pump;
- labour and transport.
We did not find published installation prices, so get the installed total in writing. Our solar installation cost page covers what to ask for.
Elements, spares and running costs
Most solar water heaters have a backup electric element in the tank. Replacement elements are sold separately; we did not collect enough listings to give a solar water heater element price, so ask the seller for the part number and price when you buy. Fit a timer or controller so the element only runs when the sun has not done the job.
Evacuated tubes can be replaced one at a time if broken. Ask whether spare tubes are stocked locally before you choose a brand.
How to get a fair price
Ask each installer for the tank size and material, the collector type, whether the system is pressurised, the brand, the warranty on the tank and collectors, and the installed total. Some sellers note that solar equipment may be VAT-exempt. Of the sellers we checked, only Chloride Exide showed its prices as tax included, so ask for VAT to be stated on the quote.
See our solar water heaters guide for the types and sizes. Companies such as Davis & Shirtliff list solar water heaters on our directory, and you can compare companies in Nairobi or send one request for up to 3 quotes.
