What a solar system costs in Kenya, by size

From the listings we checked:

  • 1kVA and 1.5kVA systems: typically about KSh 76,000, ranging from about KSh 37,500 to KSh 128,000.
  • 3kVA systems: typically about KSh 175,500, with the dearest at about KSh 390,000.
  • 5kVA systems: typically about KSh 301,000, ranging from about KSh 149,000 to KSh 950,000.
  • 10kVA systems (8–12kVA): typically about KSh 440,000, from only seven listings.

The spread comes from the battery (lead-acid or lithium, and how many kWh), the brand of inverter and the number of panels. At one solar shop, the same Huawei 5kW all-in-one system was KSh 710,000 with 10kWh of battery and KSh 950,000 with 15kWh.

1kVA, 1.5kVA and 2kVA solar systems

A 1kVA solar system runs lights, a TV, decoder, Wi-Fi and laptops, and a small fridge if the battery is big enough. A 1kVA hybrid inverter typically costs about KSh 19,800 and a 1.5kVA about KSh 24,500. Paired with a 200Ah battery (typically about KSh 21,500) and two or three panels, that is how the typical KSh 76,000 system is put together.

We found no 2kVA complete systems in the listings to price separately. A 2kVA hybrid inverter typically costs about KSh 34,000, so expect a 2kVA system to sit between the 1.5kVA and 3kVA prices. For an installed figure, Sun King's own site lists its PowerHub systems, from a 2kW model up to 5kVA, at upfront prices from about KSh 230,000, with installation included per its pages.

What a 3kVA solar system costs

A 3kVA solar system is the usual size for a family home in Kenya. It runs lights, TV, fridge, a microwave for short periods, a washing machine and a small pump, though not all at once.

The typical listed price is about KSh 175,500. To check a quote, add up the parts:

  • A 3kVA hybrid inverter: typically about KSh 52,800.
  • A lithium battery of about 5kWh: typically about KSh 110,000. Lead-acid is cheaper upfront but stores less usable power and wears faster.
  • Six 450W panels: about KSh 59,000 at typical prices.

That is roughly KSh 222,000 of equipment before mounting, cables, protection and labour, which is more than the typical listed system. Many listed systems use cheaper inverters, smaller batteries or marketplace panels, and some 3kVA "systems" are listed far below the typical price; ask exactly what is included.

5kVA and 5kW solar systems

A 5kVA solar system suits bigger homes, small offices and shops. It can run more at once, including a fridge, freezer, pumps and power tools.

kVA and kW are not quite the same. kVA is the inverter's apparent power; kW is the real power your appliances use. A 5kVA inverter usually delivers around 4 to 5kW, depending on the model. When someone offers a "solar system 5kw", check whether they mean the inverter, the panels or both.

Typical 5kVA prices from the listings we checked: the system about KSh 301,000, a 5–6kVA hybrid inverter about KSh 90,000, and a 5kWh lithium battery about KSh 110,000 (about KSh 195,000 for 10kWh). Inverter and battery prices vary widely: marketplace units sit at the bottom, while brands such as Victron, Deye and Growatt at solar shops sit well above the typical figure.

10kVA, 15kVA and 20kW systems

A 10kVA system covers a large home with heavy loads or a business. The few 8–12kVA systems we found were typically about KSh 440,000, and a hybrid inverter in that range typically costs about KSh 195,000.

We found no complete 15kVA system listed with a price, and only one 20kW package: a Jiji classified ad asking KSh 1,980,000. At that size, the system is designed around your loads, often on three-phase power, and the price depends on the inverter brand, battery size and roof. Commercial inverters above 12kW typically cost about KSh 357,500 (grid-tie) to KSh 507,500 (hybrid) on their own in the listings we checked. Get site quotes: see commercial solar.

How to compare solar system quotes

Ask every installer to itemise the quote:

  1. Inverter brand, model and kVA.
  2. Battery type, brand and usable kWh, not just "200Ah".
  3. Number, wattage and brand of panels.
  4. Mounting, cables, breakers, surge protection and earthing.
  5. Labour, transport and commissioning.
  6. Warranty on each part and on the workmanship.

Some sellers note that solar equipment may be VAT-exempt; ask for VAT to be stated on the quote. Compare the parts against our solar panel prices, battery prices and inverter prices.
