Small DC pumps are sold alone or as kits with a panel; engineered systems and pumping inverters are priced before panels and installation. Prices from listings on Kenyan shops and marketplaces, checked October 2026. Listings with impossible specs are left out.
Solar water pump price in Kenya at a glance
Going by the median of the listings we checked:
- Small DC submersible pump (about 250 to 300W), pump only: about KSh 9,400
- The same pump as a kit with a panel: about KSh 19,000
- DC surface or booster pump (12 to 24V): about KSh 22,500, from about KSh 5,000 for a basic marketplace booster to KSh 99,000 for engineered farm pumps at Davis & Shirtliff
- Dayliff solar pumps (Davis & Shirtliff): about KSh 58,000, from about KSh 13,600 to KSh 200,000
- Submersible pump 370 to 800W: about KSh 38,000
- Submersible pump 1 to 2.2kW: about KSh 87,500 (few listings)
- Solar pumping inverter (VFD): about KSh 102,000
- Lorentz PS pump system (pump and controller): about KSh 195,000, from about KSh 64,000 to nearly KSh 1 million
Panels, cable, pipes, the tank and installation are extra unless the listing is a kit. If you are pricing a particular model, such as a Futurepump SF2 (listed at KSh 95,000 by Davis & Shirtliff), compare its wattage and head with the rows above.
Solar water pump lipa mdogo mdogo: SunCulture plans
SunCulture sells farm pump kits on pay-as-you-go (it calls it Lipa Pole Pole). These are the plans its product pages showed when we checked on 12 October 2026, with the total you would pay worked out from the deposit and instalments:
- ClimateSmart Direct (submersible pump, controller and panel; up to about 1 acre): deposit KSh 3,499, then KSh 2,659 a month for 24 months, about KSh 67,300 in total. Cash price shown: KSh 44,999.
- Solar Surface Pump (two 230W foldable panels; up to about 2 acres): deposit KSh 4,499, then KSh 3,529 a month for 24 months, about KSh 89,200 in total. Cash price shown: KSh 59,999.
- RainMaker Kubwa (surface pump kit, two 230W panels; up to about 2 acres): deposit KSh 4,999, then KSh 3,809 a month for 24 months, about KSh 96,400 in total. Cash price shown: KSh 64,999.
- Rainmaker2 with ClimateSmart Battery 2 (submersible pump, battery, sprinklers and lights; up to about 1 acre): deposit KSh 7,999, then KSh 5,149 a month for 30 months, about KSh 162,500 in total.
The same product pages also showed a second, different set of cash and instalment figures, so confirm the current price with the seller before you pay. Either way, paying over time costs noticeably more than cash. Our pay-as-you-go solar page explains how these plans work.
What drives the price of a solar pumpset
- Head and depth. The deeper the water and the higher the tank, the stronger the pump and the more panels you need.
- Flow. A home needs a few hundred litres a day; irrigation needs thousands.
- Pump type. Small DC pumps are cheap but limited. AC pumps on a pumping inverter, or engineered systems with a proper controller, cost more but run longer and protect the pump.
- Panels. Most pump prices exclude them. A 1kW pump needs more than 1kW of panels to run well through the day.
- Extras. Borehole cable, safety rope, pipes, a float switch, the tank and its stand.
The solar water pumps guide explains how to match a pump to your water source.
Borehole or surface: which price applies to you
If your water is more than about 7 metres down, you need a submersible pump, priced in the submersible and Lorentz rows. See solar borehole pumps. If you pump from a shallow well, river or dam, a surface pump is cheaper. For farms, see solar irrigation for pump and drip set-ups.
Some sellers note that solar equipment may be VAT-exempt; none of the pump listings we checked said whether VAT was included, so ask for it to be stated on the quote.
Get a quote sized to your water
A pump price means little until someone has your numbers: the water source, its depth and water level, how far and high the water must go, and how much you need a day. Send them once and up to 3 licensed installers will quote for the pump, panels and installation together.
