What it costs
| Size / type | Typical price | Range |
|---|---|---|
| DC solar fridges/freezers | KSh 46,000 | 27,500 – 108,000 |
Fridge only. Panels and battery are extra unless sold as a kit. Prices are approximate and vary by brand and seller.
Can solar power run a fridge?
Yes. There are two ways to do it.
- A DC solar fridge runs straight from a 12V or 24V battery charged by panels. It needs no inverter, and DC fridges are built to use little power. This is the simplest choice off the grid.
- An ordinary AC fridge runs on a home solar system with an inverter and a battery bank. You can keep the fridge you already have, but the system must be bigger, because the inverter has to handle the jolt of power when the compressor starts, and it uses some power itself.
Either way, a fridge runs day and night, so you need a battery. Panels alone will not keep it cold after sunset.
What a solar fridge costs in Kenya
DC solar fridges and freezers typically sell for about KSh 46,000, from about KSh 27,500 for a small 50-litre fridge to about KSh 108,000 for a 233-litre Dayliff SunFridge. Branded fridges cost more than unbranded ones. Most prices are for the fridge alone.
On top of the fridge, budget for the panels, a battery and a charge controller, unless you already have a system with room to spare.
Solar that can power a TV and a fridge. Complete 1–1.5kVA systems typically sell for about KSh 76,000, roughly KSh 37,500 to KSh 128,000, and many are sold for lights, a TV and a mini fridge. A full-size fridge, or a fridge plus a freezer, needs more. See home solar systems and solar system prices.
How to size panels and a battery for a fridge
- Find the daily energy use. It is on the fridge's energy label or datasheet, in kWh per day or per year. Divide a yearly figure by 365.
- Add losses. Add about a quarter for an inverter system, less for a DC fridge.
- Size the battery to carry the fridge through the night and at least one cloudy day. Lithium batteries can be used more deeply than lead-acid ones, so you need less nominal capacity.
- Size the panels to refill the battery and run the fridge on a typical day, with spare for the rainy season.
Our solar calculator gives a first estimate. A good installer will check the fridge's real consumption before quoting.
A chest freezer uses less energy than an upright model of the same size, because cold air stays in when you open the lid. Keep any fridge out of direct sun and leave space behind it for air.
Solar milk coolers and cold rooms for farms and shops
Milk must be cooled soon after milking to keep it fresh until collection. On farms without reliable power, solar milk coolers do this: usually a DC chest cooler or a cooler with an ice or cold-water store, run from panels and a battery. Cooling into ice or chilled water during the day stores the cold for the evening milking, which can cost less than a large battery.
Solar cold rooms do the same for fruit, vegetables, fish and meat at a larger scale, for farmer groups, markets and shops. They are engineered systems, sized to the room, the produce and how much goes in each day, often with thermal storage. Solar milk coolers and cold rooms are quoted per project.
For a cold room, a dairy cooler or a shop with several freezers, ask a commercial installer to size the system. See commercial solar.
Solar powered fridge for sale in Kenya: what to check
- Voltage. 12V or 24V DC, matched to your battery. Many DC fridges accept both.
- Real daily consumption in kWh, from a datasheet, not a sales claim.
- Compressor brand and warranty. The compressor is the heart of the fridge.
- Low-voltage protection, so the fridge does not drain the battery flat.
- Size you really need. A bigger fridge uses more energy every day.
If a seller bundles panels and a battery, ask for their real sizes. A bundle with a small battery will leave the fridge warm by morning.
